Semi-permanent make-up is advertised in may different places now, magazines, TV, internet & salons, making it more accessible for everyone, but it is looked upon as something for the rich and the famous and many people still think that it is something people get done at for vanity, but in reality for someone with alopecia it can be a life changing experience.
What is Alopecia?
Alopecia is a hair loss disease that can affect anyone, at any age. Alopecia usually happens suddenly and is unexplained. Although it does not affect your health in any way, hair loss can affect your self confidence greatly. Alopecia is very common in the UK, affecting 1.7 % of the population, with a quarter of cases being hereditary.
Appearance of Alopecia
Alopecia can affect the hair on the head and face in patches or in more extreme cases all over. Usually prior to hair loss there will be itching or sore spots before the hair then falls out. Sometimes the hair will grow back in a few months but it some types of alopecia, it will never return.
What Causes Alopecia?
There is no known cause for Alopecia at current time, but it is believed to be a disease to the auto immune system where it attacks the hair follicles causing them to go into the telogen stage of hair growth, where the hair will then fall out.
Stress is also commonly linked to alopecia as is the menopause, but 25% of suffers have a family member who also has Alopecia meaning it can be a hereditary.
What treatments are available?
Unfortunately there is currently no cure for alopecia. There are many treatment available to stimulate hair growth, but they may work for one person and not for another, so some alopecia suffers choose to no have no treatment at all.

Most Alopecia suffers will wear a wig, wearing a wig helps to rebuild lost confidence. To begin with the wig will feel strange as you are not used to seeing yourself in it. Wearing your new hair around the house will help you to adjust to your new appearance. You will soon feel more comfortable and confident enough to wear it outside of the house.

Most people choose wigs with fringes to hide the fact they have no eyebrows. Without eyebrows your face lacks definition and expression. With the help of Semi-permanent make-up, having natural looking eyebrows is achievable once again.
Semi-permanent make-up can create perfectly natural hair stroke brows and mimic the effect of eyelashes around the eyes. Having semi-permanent eyebrows enable alopecia suffers to feel more relaxed when people are close up and also enables them not to have to wear a fringe at all times.
